The history of the Road Safety Campaign organized
by the Police Traffic Branch dated back to the
mid 1950s. As the city of Hong Kong grew, problems
of urbanization became increasingly serious. According
to the statistics of 1961, there were 14,906 traffic
accidents with 289 deaths and among which, 64
were children. Road safety was thus accorded top
priority on the government policy agenda. A large-scale
promotional campaign was conducted to educate
pedestrians, especially school children to keep
an eye on traffic lights and use zebra crossing.
