To make the campaigns of public health more effective
and far-reaching, Miss Ping On, an "official agent"
to promote good hygiene, was created by the Public
Relations Office in 1958. Miss Ping On was a cartoon
figure derived from the Chinese characters, "good
health" and "safety".
A colourful Miss Ping On in different poses with
different messages teaching simple hygiene habits
was depicted in a regular series of posters issued
by the government. In fact, she appeared in almost
all government posters that publicized health
education between the late 1950s and early 1960s.
